BCHS snags the 5A-II Boys Basketball State Championship on a 3-pointer in the closing seconds.

By In&Out Staff Writers

When Boulder Creek High School played its first season of varsity basketball back in 2004, there were no seniors on the team because the school was brand new and not yet accepting seniors. It was rough. But my how things have changed.

Boulder Creek (28-2), coached by Randy Walker, won the 5A-II Boys Basketball State Championship March 3, defeating Chaparral of Scottsdale 59 to 58 in a real nail-biter.

Junior guard Ryan Zettle sank a game-winning three-pointer in the final seconds. Zettle's scored only 9 points, but they were dramatic points. At the end of the third quarter, he hit one from half court, and his only other bucket was also a 3-pointer.

It was not the first championship for the school — they've taken the state in golf three years ago.

A video compilation celebrating the BCHS victory is here. An account of the game is here. io
