As school budgets sing the blues, ProMusica Arizona plans to pick up the beat with a Youth Ensemble and Youth Honor Choir.
By In&Out Staff Writers The sound of children’s voices in unison speaks to our soul, and creates lifelong lovers of song. So, PMAZ is to be honored for its effort in extending musical training and encouragement to the children of the North Valley. “At a time when schools and government are stepping back from their commitment to art and music, we are stepping up to offer new avenues for North Valley youth to explore music,” said Lissi Weiss, president of the board of directors of PMAZ. This weekend, 4th–7th graders of the North Valley are invited to audition for PMAZ’s new Youth Honor Choir. The Honor Choir will accept as many as 50 students who will rehearse once a week for six weeks in preparation for the spring performance, “Sounds of America,” on May 15 and 16. The choir will perform separately and together with PMAZ Chorale. ProMusica sees itself playing a critical role in the building of the North Valley community. “We are committed to nurturing the love of music in our children,” said Weiss. “Once you have sung in a chorus or played an instrument as a child… you grow up to seek out great music. You gather together in community with others to perform and to listen.” Students will audition in small groups to lessen the anxiety and keep the experience fun for the young ones. A Youth Instrumental Ensemble has also formed. About 13 children ages 11–17 join weekly to get experience playing as an ensemble. The hope is to form a North Valley youth orchestra as early as fall. io Youth Honor Choir Auditions March 5, 6, 7 Contact for audition time Boulder Creek High School, Small Auditorium 40404 N.
