Clients in the Valley and across the nation have cut down on salon visits, according to Spa Advisors Inc. Consultant Kay Moroz. “They are really tightening up,” she told In&Out.

Yet, some of the longest-standing Anthem salons we visited were busy. Each claims to put you—its cherished guest—as No. 1. But the beauty industry is full of personality, and each of these businesses opened prior to the recession and has handled the economic struggle with unique style. In these parts, small businesses are cherished. One can’t throw a stone without hitting someone who works for, owns or needs the services of a small business.

But don’t. It's tough enough out there. According to a National Association for the Self-Employed study conducted early this year, 60 percent of self-employed and micro-businesses (defined as 10 or less employees) reported a significant decrease in sales and/or revenue since 2008.

New BBQ Eatery Opens July 1 Print E-mail

You may have tasted their barbecue served at events in Anthem by their catering business. Now Anthem neighbors David and Karyn Rosol are opening shop in the old Big Apple Bagel location near Ace Hardware. The couple has been in Anthem for five years and barbecuing competitively for three. (Yes, for some it's serious sport.) The menu at Q-to-U will include traditional favorites from ribs and pulled pork, plus salads and appetizers—including deep-fried mac and cheese. Meals start at about $8 for a sandwich and a side. io
